Importance of focusing on Dharma practice in difficult times

6 April 2025

Photo courtesy of the official Facebook page of Rumtek Monastery

Hello. Good evening.

Today is Sunday. It is wonderful that all of you came to join the Chod puja.

Life is very busy. Time passes very quickly. March 2025 has already passed.

But the crazy mind always jumps with too many worries, hope, and fear. When some problems happen, the crazy mind becomes totally crazy. So, we forget what we did [in the past] and what we will have to do in the future is likewise completely forgotten at that moment. We only focus on problems, which causes us a lot of suffering and great pain.

For example, a gentleman had worked in the Kagyu Monlam in Bodhgaya for some years. I do not want to mention his name. This gentleman had a girlfriend who is a Tibetan living in Canada.

Slowly, they became closer to each other and then got married. After getting married, the woman got pregnant and gave birth to a son.

Then, the wife came from Canada to India. During the last Kagyu Monlam, the couple and their son stayed together in Bodhgaya. After the Kagyu Monlam, they got visas and went to Toronto, Canada.

After arriving in Toronto, perhaps for some days, they had some very big problems. They had an argument, following which they decided to get divorced.

At that time, Lama Choedak asked me to give some teachings to both of them because they had so many problems. He was in China and it was not easy for him to use WhatsApp.

So then, I talked to both sides [the husband and his wife].

The husband talked a lot about the problems of his wife and her family. The wife and her family talked very badly about the husband.

Yet the husband and wife remained in contact for some years. During which they checked each other. They asked a high Rinpoche to perform a divination who said the divination was very good. So, after going through many situations, they decided to be together for life and now have a very young son.

When they encountered problems, they forgot what they had talked about in the past, how they decided to get married, did good things for each other for many years etc. They only focused on the negative side and only talked about the bad things to each other. It became totally crazy and broke this marriage.

So, the young son had lost both parents.

Why am I talking about this?

It is because if we do not engage in Dharma practice, then we will focus on the negative sides and follow our afflictive emotions when we have problems. This is very, very dangerous. It is as if we have become totally crazy.

At that time, they made a very bad decision and thus a very, very big mistake. It is because they totally forgot about respecting each other, practicing patience, and taking care of the other person. They forgot everything at that time and only focused on the negative sides, being overwhelmed by their afflictive emotions.

So, slowly, they thought about the life of this young son and how to take care of this young baby. They had lots of problems already.

This means that if our mind does not focus on Dharma practice, it can bring a lot of suffering, causing us to make so many mistakes. Many bad things can happen. It is very dangerous. Our life can change completely to a side with big problems in just a minute.

So, we have to check the importance of Dharma practice. If we can focus on Dharma practice, then we can check how Dharma practice can protect us. If we can really practice the Dharma, then we can see how powerful Dharma practice is for cleansing so many problems.

Therefore, Dharma practice is very, very important for our life. Then, how can we become so lazy with Dharma practice?

You understood these benefits of Dharma practice, and this is why you came to practice in the Wisdom Light Office.

That is also why I always say that all of you are very, very lucky to be able to practice Dharma.

So, please, please take care of your Dharma practice.

So, please, please be very careful with the five poisons (i.e., kleshas or afflictive emotions) and what comes up in your mind. Be very careful. They are very dangerous.

So, thanks so much to all of you.

Mind is the source of all happiness and suffering

8 April 2025

Trashi Deleg, everyone!

So, thank you all so much for coming over to practice Dharma.

We have many things, such as houses, money, clothes, friends, families, and much more. But they are not with us all the time. It is our body, speech, and mind that are with us all the time.

When we sleep, we cannot talk and feel our body. But our mind will still jump somewhere, feeling something in the dreams. Sometimes we feel afraid. Sometimes we feel unhappy. Sometimes we may feel peace. So, in our mind, there is always something happening when we sleep.

Sometimes when we just rest on a chair without any work during our free time, our body just stays on the chair, but our mind jumps to so many things. We may think about something of the past or plan something for the future. Maybe we feel worried or scared. There can be so many things. The mind will think, do, or plan something.

Sometimes when our body is very healthy, our mind follows negative emotions or a sad situation, we feel lonely, bored or scared, etc. Then we suffer so much, and a healthy body cannot help us at all.

Sometimes our body becomes sick. Maybe we stay in a bed. Yes, we become sick and are suffering. But most of the suffering we feel comes from our mind. If you switch on a computer or mobile phone to watch some very nice movies or something else at that time, your mind becomes very focused on the movie or whatever else you are doing, and you forget about the sickness and suffering of your body.

Yes, the body is sick. You stay in your bed. But the mind is concentrating on some nice movies or something else, making you forget the sickness, suffering, and worries completely.

So, our sickness in the body does not make us suffer. Most of the time, it is our mind that makes us suffer.

It is because if our sickness in the body would really make us suffer, then you would still feel sick when you are watching a movie. But when your mind concentrates on other things, the feeling of suffering disappears. That means that all our suffering comes from our mind.

If our mind can focus on practicing Dharma, then most suffering can disappear, and we may automatically feel peace and relaxation.

So, the key point is that all our suffering and happiness come from our mind.

So, how can our mind be controlled? How can our mind change to the positive side? How can we be relaxed all the time?

The only thing that can make these happen is Buddhadharma.

Therefore, you are super, super lucky to be able to focus on Dharma practice. So, you have to continue to practice Dharma in your daily life.

[On the surface,] it looks like people just chant, meditate, and that they are not doing anything at all. It looks like nothing has been done. But it is so powerful; all the happiness, suffering and problems come from our mind. Practicing Dharma changes the mind and this is so important.

For that, you always have to take care of your mind, focus on it, and practice Dharma in order to change your mind. This is very, very important.

Thank you so much.

It is very lucky to have the opportunity to cheer other people up

14 April 2025

Hello, everyone! Good evening!

Yesterday, you gave out lucky bags and many old people came. It looked very wonderful.

During the lifetime as a human being, the most difficult phase is when one becomes old.

It is because most people do not like the elderly. After getting old, it is not easy to see clearly with one’s eyes; one’s ears cannot hear clearly; most old people cannot walk well; it is not easy to digest certain food. Some old people do not have good friends and most families do not take care of them. They get sick very easily and cannot sleep well at night.

But their mind is not old at all. Their crazy mind [still] needs so many things that their bodies cannot make that happen. That makes them suffer so much.

Actually, the children take care of their parents in Asian culture, while American and European culture does not encourage children to take care of old people.

Hong Kong was under British rule for many years. So many people in Hong Kong think and act according to British culture, making many, many old people here suffer a lot. Nobody greets old people, and no one takes care of them.

Preparing lucky bags is not costly at all. The bags, in fact, are great for old people.

Old people have everything at home. But their mind always wants something else. So, when they came, all of you took care of them, talked nicely to them, saying ‘good health’, etc., making the old people very, very happy. Therefore, all of you made very good karma yesterday.

In fact, it is not so easy to make other people happy.

Many people are working very hard. When you work, all your colleagues look very serious with a lot of pressure. You cannot make them happy. If you ask them to help you because you need something, etc., you may make them feel even sadder. Maybe they want to stay far away from you.

When you get back to your home, maybe all the family members are busy watching TV or looking at their mobile phones. If you ask them for something or to do something, they may not be happy about and think you are disturbing them.

So, life is usually busy with work. When we go back home, we become very busy with our mobile phones and our life passes.

Therefore, it is not easy to make other people happy.

I think it looked like more than 100 people got there yesterday. When they arrived, you talked to them by saying, ‘Welcome. Please go there.’ You asked for the ticket and gave them something. They became very happy.

Particularly, the old people who usually have nobody to take care of them and who have nobody to talk to felt very, very happy when you talked nicely to them and took care of them.

It is not easy to get such an opportunity. It is not easy to get such a good chance. So, all of you are very lucky.

Many Dharma friends joined yesterday’s puja. Today, you came to join the puja as well. You are very lucky and this is very wonderful.

Thank you so much.

Problems and good things are our karmic consequences

19 April 2025

Today is Saturday. It is great that all of you come to practice Tara.

We live in samsara and everyone has lots of problems.

When problems appear, most people think they come from other people. But problems actually do not come from others. Problems come from our [own] karma. So, we have been reborn in samsara for many lifetimes. Sometimes, we did good karma. Sometimes, we did some bad karma. Then some of these results appear in this life.

We have got a precious human body. We have met Buddhadharma. We have a house, jobs, food and everything. They all come from our past life’s good karma.

Sometimes we get sick. Sometimes we have problems with our families. Sometimes we lose our job. Sometimes other people do something bad or talk badly about us. These types of suffering come from our past life or this life’s bad karma.

But most people do not understand this law of karma. So, they think that when they get good things, do very good jobs, it is because of their own power; that this is their good own idea, their hard work. They only talk about ‘me’. But they do not know it is because they did good karma in their past life because they can no longer remember that.

When some problems happen, most people say that someone else did something wrong; someone’s ideas are good enough; someone else did not care about a particular job or made a mistake. So, we point our fingers at other people, thinking all the problems come from them. So, people do not know that they did bad karma in their past life/lives, that they have done something wrong to other people; they cannot recognize this bad karma.

This way, they turn small problems into very big problems and big problems into very dangerous problems. Yet, they still think that they are the best and that they have good ideas. This is called ignorance and stupidity.

So, time has become very, very wonderful and meaningful when you come to do the Tara puja today.

Generate loving kindness and compassion for all living beings and think, ‘May I be able to bring all living beings to Buddhahood with my practice during the Tara puja today’. Then do the visualization.

If we can have deep devotion or trust towards Mother Tara, Tara’s blessing can be very, very powerful.

When you really focus on the practice of Tara, your crazy mind will become very relaxed and peaceful and then you can get a lot of blessings from the Buddhas of the 10 directions and Tara. Then your body will immediately become very warm. The loving kindness and bodhichitta that you generated can cut your selfishness and big ego. Your pure visualization can eliminate so many bad feelings and negative emotions.

So, you are very, very lucky. Please do not worry about small things during this very lucky time [moment]. Do not be busy with your mobile phone. There is no need to answer others’ questions. There is no need to check what other Dharma brothers and sisters are doing.

Please be 100% focused on your Tara practice. Then your Dharma practice in this 1.5-hour session can become super powerful. This power can eliminate so much bad karma and make so much good karma. So, you are very lucky.

Thank you.

The best offering to the Guru

20 April 2025

Good evening, everyone.

Today is Sunday. It is really wonderful that many people joined the Chod puja.

So, all of you are very, very busy with your own job or your own family. But most students [nevertheless] try to join the puja every evening. Apart from joining the pujas, many students practice the four foundations, too.

Therefore, the Wisdom Light Office is very important for us and all of you need to take care of the Wisdom Light Office.

It is very important for those who work for the Wisdom Light Office to continue with the work.

Of course, there are people who are so busy and cannot join the puja every evening and work for the Wisdom Light Office. If you cannot join the pujas and come here in person to work, then your mind can rejoice in those who practice in the Wisdom Light Office and you can talk nicely about the Wisdom Light Office to support it. This is very, very important for the Wisdom Light Office because this office is very important for Dharma practice.

The Wisdom Light Office is very important for my project in Martam. All your Dharma practice is very, very important for the Karma Kagyu lineage. These Dharma practices are very important for all living beings. So, it is very important for us to think more about the positive side of the Wisdom Light Office.

Of course, the Wisdom Light Office has some problems because this is not the Amitabha pure land and all Dharma brothers and sisters are not yet Buddhas. Everyone has the five poisons. But all [our] Dharma brothers and sisters have loving kindness, compassion and wisdom, too.

So, it is very, very important for us to focus on the positive aspects.

If we can think [more] about the positive aspects, then it is very easy for Dharma brothers and sisters to respect each other.

If we talk [more] about the positive side of the Wisdom Light Office, then the Wisdom Light Office will be very comfortable and beneficial for other Dharma brothers and sisters when they come here. Then all [our] Dharma brothers and sisters can have a very good relationship. It can benefit all your Dharma practice and help all living beings, and also my big project.

If you are careless, then it is very easy for our crazy mind to jump to the negative side. Then you will say someone in the Wisdom Light Office has problems and that they are bad. If you speak like this, it creates so many problems for the Wisdom Light Office.

You will make whoever goes to the Wisdom Light Office uncomfortable due to the negative talk. Every day, you will make those who work for the Wisdom Light Office feel tired, sad and unhappy to work.

Then, what else will happen?

It is very bad for the relationship among Dharma brothers and sisters. It is very bad for all the Dharma practice. It is very bad in supporting my work.

Finally, what will be the result?

Your bad actions will disturb the Dharma practice, resulting in a lot of bad karma for yourself.

So, what do you want to get? Would you like to go to the positive side or the negative one?

So, be careful.

It is very easy for our mind to jump to the negative side. It is very easy for our mind to jump to the five poisons. It is very easy for it to jump to the negative side all the time. So, please, please be careful with your crazy mind.

Tomorrow will be my birthday.

I know many students and people pray for me, my good health, and success in my Dharma activities. Many people brought many flowers, cakes and many offerings here. They are all very good, and thank you so much.

But the best, best offering to me is your mind being able to focus on pure Dharma practice. If you really think that I am your guru, please think more about the positive side and do not jump too much to the negative side. This is the best offering from all of you to me. This can be very beneficial to all of you.

Why is this a very important offering to me?

It is because when your mind focuses on the positive side, it brings a lot of happiness to yourself. It brings so many Dharma practices for you. It can be a big help to all living beings.

All of you are my students. I am your Vajra master. All of you are Vajra brothers and sisters. So, it is a Vajrayana family. It is very, very important for you to respect each other. If you do not respect each other, and talk badly about others, then you will break the Vajrayana vows. When the Vajrayana vows are broken, you will need to go down to the hell realm.

Of course, there are always problems. If it happens one or two hours later, then you need to do the Vajrasattva practice to cleanse this bad karma and change the mind to the positive side right away.

If this bad feeling continues and you keep it in your mind for maybe five or six hours or more, then it is not easy to cleanse this bad karma.

If you continue to keep this for 24 hours or more, then this is already very dangerous.

So be careful! Be careful!

Thank you so much.

Be aware

21 April 2025

Thanks so much to all of you for coming to my birthday celebration.

So, let us offer a mandala, and the items of body, speech and mind. After that, students who would like to make an offering can do so as well because I will not be able to join you online again after the puja.

This offering is not just for me. It is for the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from the 10 directions, the Gurus, Yidams, Dharma Protectors, Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Visualize all of them when you make the offering.

Many people practice the four foundations and know how to visualize the mandala offering.

First of all, think how to do a pure mandala offering for all living beings to be free from samsara and become enlightened.

Now, let us practice Tara.

The most important thing is to have a pure motivation with bodhichitta and focus on visualizing Tara.

When you focus on the Tara practice, it can benefit you, all the great masters and all sentient beings a lot. If you can focus on the Tara practice, you will definitely get a lot of Tara’s blessings. When you practice Tara, you can definitely cleanse a lot of bad karma and obstacles. When you practice Tara, your wisdom, loving kindness, and compassion, meditation and all your Dharma practices will definitely improve.

When you do not trust or believe in Dharma practice and do not focus on the practice, then you cannot get any blessing, even if you practice Tara for 100 years.

If you do not practice Tara, then your mind will certainly turn to the negative side. If your mind jumps to the negative side, then it is certain that the five poisons, or kleshas, will appear.  If your mind jumps to the five poisons, you will certainly make a lot of bad karma during the Tara puja. If you make any bad karma, it will certainly bring a lot of suffering, obstacles, and problems to you.

So, there are two sides, and they all come from your mind, not others. Do you want to focus on Dharma practice, getting a lot of blessings? Or do you want to make bad karma?

All of you love yourself so much. So, it is certain that you want to take care of yourself, and you do not want to have any suffering and problems.

But we are always carried away by doing negative things due to our own ignorance, our bad habits, selfishness, and the five poisons.

So, we have to be very, very careful with our crazy mind and should not forget awareness.

We need to always check what our body is doing; if our mind has jumped to the good or negative side. We always need to check these.

We always need to remember when the crazy mind has jumped a bit to the bad side, because it can make so much bad karma. It can bring so many problems and suffering. So, we always need to be very careful with our monkey mind.

Therefore, you do not need to take care of other things. What other people do or say are not important to you at all.

I am now requesting you, ‘please, please focus on your pure Dharma practice.’

Thank you so much.

The power of Buddhadharma

24 April 2025

So, good evening, everyone!

I went to Martam and just arrived at Rumtek Monastery.

Today, I took one family to the land we got in Martam. This family has a lot of problems with their business, physical, and mental health. Sometimes, the entire family cannot sleep and there is bad energy.

Rumtek Monastery has a small branch in Kolkata (Calcutta). The family visited this monastery, asked for blessings from the lama/s there and explained their problems. The lama there said he could not help and asked the family to go to Rumtek Monastery.

When they arrived in Rumtek Monastery, the monastery’s chant master sent them to see me, and I gave them some teachings and blessings.

Today, I took them to the land in Martam, teaching them laughing yoga.

This family is now feeling much better than before.

So, Buddhadharma is very, very powerful. Without Buddhadharma, the crazy mind will jump to the negative side all the time, bringing a lot of suffering and problems and turning small problems into big problems. That can be very, very dangerous.

So, all of you are very, very lucky to have received so many teachings and being able to do Dharma practice every day. You need to know that being able to do Dharma practice is very, very lucky and super amazing.

Please do not forget to practice Dharma every moment and be more focused on practicing Dharma. There is no need to care about small things and what other people do and talk. You need to trust and believe in your [own] Dharma practice. You need to pay attention to your Dharma practice. This is very, very important.

Differences between caring and not caring about Dharma practice

25 April 2025

Good evening.

It is very, very wonderful that you can come here to practice the Dharma. Please do not forget a pure motivation, endowed with bodhichitta. Please do your best to dedicate your Dharma practice to all living beings so they can become Buddhas.

We need to have so many things. But Dharma practice is the most important thing of all.

However, many people do not care so much about practicing Dharma. Only some people with wisdom take care of [their] Dharma practice.

For example, when Milarepa went to see Marpa, it was difficult for him to get [Dharma] teachings. Marpa asked him to build houses of different shapes.

Sometimes, when Marpa gave teachings and empowerments, Milarepa hoped to receive some of those. But Marpa beat him severely.

Milarepa had so many problems in getting teachings from Marpa. But why did he still continue to try to work hard to get the teachings?

It is because Milarepa knew Dharma is very, very important and that only Dharma can free people from samsara and bring them to Buddhahood.

When he practiced in the mountains, he did not care about food. He did not care about clothes. He did not care about some nice cushions or other things. He did not care about these at all. He only cared about his Dharma practice.

Why?

It is because he was wise enough to know Dharma is more important than anything else.

But many people do not know that Dharma practice is very, very important. So, they care about many other things other than their Dharma practice.

For example, when someone goes to a Dharma center, he or she first only cares if the center is very comfortable. If it is uncomfortable, then they will leave that center. They do not care about Dharma practice.

When some people go to a center, they care if they can get very nice friends, and then they can get a seed of Dharma practice there. But if they cannot meet any good friends, then they will leave the center. They do not care about Dharma practice.

Some work for a Dharma center and need some power. They want everyone to listen to them. If they cannot get the power and nobody listens to them, then they want to leave. They do not care about Dharma practice.

They do not worry about practicing Dharma. They do not worry that their practice may not continue, and they do not continue to practice either.

Sometimes they just have a short time to practice. Then they do not worry about anything because Dharma practice is not important to them.

So, it is very, very lucky that you can continue to practice the Dharma. You have to try to continue to practice Dharma, in particular when there are not many people, it becomes very easy to become focused on Dharma practice. That is very, very good.

Focus more on developing our Dharma practice

27 April 2025

Photo courtesy of the official Facebook page of Rumtek Monastery

Okay, today is Sunday. You came to the Wisdom Light Office to practice Dharma.

I want to try to talk [to you] before the puja starts. It is because after the puja, this place always rains and the sky will turn dark.

So, everyone is very busy. There is so much housework to do, and people need to see some friends and family members. Others need to rest at home. But you still leave everything behind to come to the Wisdom Light Office to practice Dharma.

Why did you come here? It is because you know that Dharma practice is very, very important.

When you go to another place, your home is not with you. When you go somewhere else, your family or all of your family members are not with you. But wherever you go, your body is with you.

So, our body is very, very important to us. But when we die, our body will have to be burned in the fire. We will need to leave everything behind.

When we are in the bardo (intermediate state) and born into the next life, our mind is with us all the time. Our mind is with us day and night.

When we sleep, we are not aware of anything. But our mind is always with us and has both positive and negative sides.

The positive side has many [good qualities], including wisdom, love, compassion, concentration, and patience.

When we follow the positive side, it brings a lot of happiness, makes other people happy and gives us wonderful things. When our mind can follow the positive side, it brings us a lot of good things and really benefits other living beings.

When our mind follows the negative side, it creates a lot of suffering and makes other people suffer, too.

So how can we increase our positive qualities? How can we follow the positive side?

That can only happen when we practice the Dharma. If you forget to practice the Dharma, it is very easy for our crazy mind to jump to the negative side. So, Dharma practice is very, very important.

For example, Buddha Shakyamuni was a prince living in a palace with a very, very beautiful wife and royal power. He had many people serving him, many things in the palace and many beautiful girls offering him dances with music. Every day, he had a great variety of delicious food that was offered to him. He could wear very expensive clothes every day.

But he left everything behind to stay under a tree without a house and cushions. Nobody served him food. He had nothing.

Many people said Prince Siddhartha was crazy and stupid because he had everything, but he left all of it behind. So, he had nothing and looked like a beggar begging for food from other families.

But he did not listen to other people. He did not care about what other people said.

Why? It is because he had wisdom and knew what was important and what was not important at all. He only cared about his Dharma practice.

Sometimes, he could not get any food. Sometimes, he could not get anything. But that did not matter to him. He only focused on practicing Dharma.

When he continued to practice the Dharma, his Dharma practice gradually improved and eventually, he became enlightened. He gave teachings to many living beings. Although he passed away 2,500 years ago, his Dharma teachings did and still can help so many living beings.

This is a very good example for us.

Everyone is very busy. Everyone has so much work. But many students only focus on practicing Dharma. This is because you are all very, very lucky. That means you understand that Dharma practice is far more important than other work.

There is no need to care about the good or bad things that other people talk about. That is not important.

You need to focus on how to improve your Dharma practice and how you can practice Dharma continuously. This is more important than focusing on other things.

Sometimes, when problems arise, you focus on the problems and stop practicing Dharma. That means you are very, very stupid.

We have so many problems and obstacles in this life because they are the results of our bad karma. When that happens, we need to be more careful and focus even harder on practicing Dharma. This is very, very important.

Everything is impermanent. Time flies. Dharma practice is very, very important. When we die, only Dharma practice can help us.

So, thank you so much for paying attention to your Dharma practice.
